Celebrating July 4th in New York City
What a glorious 4th we had in New York (actually it was in Weehauken, NJ) but that is a minor difference. We untied in the morning before most people were up and slowly motored down the Hudson, past Ellis Island to the Statue of Liberty. The excursion boats were zipping past but we were able to do a picture of the three of us in front of the statue. The morning light was great on her face- what a sight!
The rest of the day was spent watching all of our fellow
dock mates making their preparations for huge dock parties. I imagine
each boat had an average of 20 guests for the day. That's a lot of
ice, food, drinks, tables, umbrellas, chairs, decorations, etc.
Everyone seemed to be having a great time but I would bet that by today
there were a lot of sunburned people with hangovers. Our guest,
Joanne, arrived at 5PM so we had a small group for dinner and fireworks.
Our marina was right where the fireworks were, shot off of six barges strung
down the river. Fireboats, fly-overs, Coast Guard blockades, and
wonderful fireworks which were identical on all 6 barges. Media said
that there were 40,000 rockets and I was blown away. Becka stayed on
the boat with Fred and came out of hiding when the noise was over, not
seeming to be too disturbed.
This morning we headed back up the Hudson, past West
Point, to Newburgh. Tomorrow we will take our rental car back up to
Albany and pick up the truck and trailer. When we get back we'll pull
the boat out of the water and head to our next adventure down the turnpike a
ways.
We hope all our friends and family are healthy and happy. We'd be
happier if it wasn't so "gol durned" hot. The weather in NY was
wonderful but we are now in for a few days of heat.
