August 1 - Driving Across the Big Country
When you drive across the country, the immensity of it keeps on hitting you. Miles after miles of changing landscapes, changing roads, changing people, but still the same McDonalds, Wal-Marts, and KMarts. We are travelling Interstate 40 which took us through Nashville, Memphis, Little Rock, and Oklahoma City. The picture left is crossing the Mississippi River.
The heat is still with us (107 yesterday) but the humidity is better. Sitting in an air conditioned car makes it very tolerable. Western Virginia was a beautiful countryside but we left the Blue Ridge Parkway after 30 miles because it was so hazy that the views weren't great and at 35mph it was getting us nowhere. Oklahoma roads are the worst yet, even worse than California. West of here today is the panhandle of Texas and then into New Mexico.
View from the Blue Ridge Parkway. Your webmaster and wife had the same experience. Too much heat haze to make it worth the slow pace. |
