June 24 - The Boat Trip Starts
And
we're off!! The trip from Ohio was uneventful but also beautiful.
New York is soooo pretty. When we arrived at the marina, the boat was
in the water already and the yellow waterline indicated that it had been in
for a little while. All seemed in order and we did the provisioning
and the required trips to West Marine, Wal Mart, and Home Depot to buy all
the things we have at home but forgot to pack. One item we forgot was
rain gear-- BIG mistake! We have already been through several
significant storms and have the curtains up around the cockpit.
Becka has adapted quite well and has found her spot under the table in the
"V".
We
moved from our wintering marina this afternoon and went all of 1 mile north
to the city of Waterford which is at the start of the Erie Canal.
There is a very nice municipal dock and welcome center with free mooring and
electricity. The owner of a local restaurant, Trader Ed's, also picked
us up and took us to his restaurant and returned us to the dock. Yummy
lobster ravioli!
Tomorrow we will go through our last lock, the Federal Lock, which will put us into the Hudson River. We will be back in our familiar tidal waters. We have made reservations for a marina in Catskill and then in Kingston. Reservations seem to be required- the municipal marina in Kingston wanted $200 for Fri-Sun because they were having fireworks. I think we will be able to see them from our different marina down the block for a whole lot less. We are looking forward to renting a car and driving to see Hyde Park.
We'll be in touch from muggy, muggy NY. Hope it gets drier.
