July 13 - St. Michaels and Annapolis
We
made it to St. Michaels without too much trouble, but it seems like the
Chesapeake is not a calm body of water. There doesn't seem to be the
"calm in the morning/windy in the afternoon" scenario. So far we have
not seen less than 1-2' waves which are the most we can take at a reasonable
speed. Joan and Becka have to tough it out.
St. Michaels was a very nice harbor with a great maritime museum which
chronicled the fishing and recreational uses of the Chesapeake. See
marina picture right. Oysters, crabs, and eels--oh, my! At
$100/night we decided that one night was our limit and we headed to
Annapolis.
The waves were still there and we eventually pounded our way into Annapolis and found our way to Ego Alley. We got a nice slip which is on a first-come/first-served basis but at half the price of St. Michaels. We are right in the heart of historic Annapolis and spent two nights here. Tonight they had a Navy band concert in the park 100' from here. We took a tour of the Naval Academy today. It is much less restricted than West Point- all we had to do was show a picture ID and we could go all over the yard.
We have had great seafood dinners and took a tour of the
city via electric car. Tonight there was a significant thunderstorm
after the concert and it continues to be very muggy which is beginning to
wear on us. It is hard to be cooped up in the AC conditioned boat
because it is very confining.
I hope I have some pictures to add to this epistle.
