This year it is Kingston, NY and a trip to West Point. Last year it was Kingston in Canada with their equivalent to West Point. We arrived yesterday and tried to get our rental car, to be told that they would not pick us up as arranged because it was "Saturday". A taxi ride later we made it in time to get our car and then took off to visit Hyde Park. It was a lovely drive and we were not disappointed by the Vanderbilt mansion and the wonderful tour given by the National Park Service guide. We discovered that as a 62+ senior we get lifetime admission to the National Parks with a one-time $10 admission which allows us (Fred) to bring 3 guests. Good deal. We then went to see FDR's home, Springwood, and his grave and library. Just walked around the grounds, though, because Becka was back on the boat.
Today we went down the west side of the river to see West Point. It was well worth the trip to see the chapel, parade grounds, and the beautiful views of the Hudson. With all the security you have to take an organized bus tour with ID checks when you buy the tickets and when you get on the bus. A bonus was the organ music in the chapel (photo right) as we were touring it.
We drove through several towns along the way and made arrangements for our next night's stay in Newburgh--lots or restaurants on the water to pick from for celebrating our 41st anniversary.
For all of you who love to hear all the tales of boating woe from previous adventures, I'm afraid I have none to share. The closest to a woe is the alarm which kept sounding for hours which told us that there was no ground on our electrical connection. We had to turn the power off last night to sleep but I think the problem is under control now. There will be fireworks at the Kingston Marina tonight at 9:30 to top off their Festival today. I'm looking forward to it but am not sure that Becka is.
